BMAC for Grade 3–4 Knee Osteoarthritis (Heliyon, 2018)

Study Type: Retrospective Cohort • n=233 • Mean follow-up ≈ 11 months

Objective

Evaluate clinical efficacy and safety of a single intra-articular bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) injection in patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren–Lawrence grade 3–4).

Methods

Patients received a single BMAC injection processed via a single-spin technique. Outcomes included Numeric Pain Scale (NPS) and Oxford Knee Score (OKS) at follow-up.

Key Results

  • Pain: NPS improved from 8.33 → 4.49 (p < 0.001).
  • Function: OKS improved from 20.20 → 32.29 (p < 0.001).
  • Safety: No complications reported in the cohort.

Conclusion

A single intra-articular BMAC injection was associated with clinically meaningful improvements in pain and function among patients with advanced knee OA in this retrospective cohort.
